In Excel, what happens when you double-click the boundary between column headers?

It hides the column.

Double-clicking the boundary between column headers makes that column resize to fit its contents. Excel looks at the widest piece of data in the column (including the header) and sets the width so that everything fits on one line, so you don’t have to guess the right width manually. It’s a quick way to ensure all data is visible without truncation. If you’ve selected multiple adjacent columns, double-clicking the boundary will auto-fit all of the selected columns to their respective contents. This action adjusts width only and isn’t about hiding, duplicating, or locking anything.
